Low Ceilings? Why a Custom Steam Room Fits Where a Cabin Won’t
A steam cabin is a fixed height, and in a loft conversion or a basement that height can end the plan before it starts. Most Vidalux steam showers are listed at 2,200mm tall and the Fusion Steam 1200 at 2,150mm, and each needs some space above it for fitting. If your room is too low for those, a custom steam room is the route that still works, because it’s built around a separate steam generator and the room can follow the ceiling you already have.
This guide covers where the cabin height limit comes from, what a custom steam room needs from the building, how a lower ceiling changes generator sizing, and which parts Vidalux supplies.
Why Does a Steam Cabin Need a Minimum Ceiling Height?
A steam cabin needs a minimum ceiling height because it’s a factory-made enclosure with fixed dimensions. Its roof panel, overhead shower, lighting, and steam outlet all sit inside that structure, so the height comes from the product. Steam itself has no minimum height.
Most Vidalux steam showers are listed at 2,200mm tall and the Fusion Steam 1200 at 2,150mm, the room needs some space above the cabin for fitting, and the range doesn’t currently include a steam shower for spaces with only 1,800mm of height. Those figures come from the way a cabin is built: it arrives as a complete unit with a sealed roof, and it either fits the room or it doesn’t. There’s no way to cut a cabin down to suit a sloping loft ceiling or a basement with a beam across it. A custom steam room starts from the other end. The room is built first, to whatever height the space allows, and the steam comes from a generator that sits outside it.
What happens if a cabin arrives and doesn’t fit?
Measure before you order. Under Vidalux’s returns policy, a return of an untouched and uninstalled item for unsuitability carries a restocking fee. Details can be found on the RETURNS FORM, so it pays to confirm the height first.
How Does a Custom Steam Room Work Under a Low Ceiling?
A custom steam room works under a low ceiling because the generator that makes the steam sits outside the room. Inside, you have the steam outlet and, if you choose, the control panel, and neither sets a minimum height. The door does: Vidalux’s shortest steam room door is 1860mm high, so the ceiling has to clear that, and a sloped ceiling needs some extra height of its own.
A steam generator converts cold water into steam and feeds it into a sealed room through an outlet. The heat is made in one place and used in another, the way a boiler in a utility cupboard warms the rest of a house. Vidalux’s guidance lists a cupboard, a loft, an adjacent room, or space under seating with access as suitable places for the generator. It must never go inside the steam room, and at least one side of the unit has to stay accessible for servicing.
The hardware is compact. The 4.5kW steam room generator measures 130mm wide, 320mm high, and 320mm long, and its control panel is 125mm by 90mm by 20mm. The panel can go inside or outside the room on a 3m lead as standard, and a 5m extension cable takes that to 8m where the generator sits further away.
A loft roofline can work in your favour. A sloped ceiling is recommended in a steam room because it stops condensation dripping on whoever is sitting below, and where the roof already slopes, the room may have that angle built in. If your ceiling is flat, here’s how much ceiling slope you need and why.
What a Custom Steam Room Needs From the Building
A custom steam room needs four things from the building: a full seal, surfaces that cope with constant steam, a floor that drains, and a dedicated electrical supply for the generator. Your installer designs and builds those, and Vidalux supplies the generator and the door.
Sealing comes first. Vidalux’s guidance is no open ventilation while the room is in use and a moisture-proof door, so the steam stays inside the room. A bathroom extractor running during a session works against that.
The room should also be designed like a wet room, with the floor draining to a working waste. Condensation and moisture build up during every session, so it’s worth connecting to a working waste where you can, as Vidalux suggests for steam-only use of its steam showers.
Can the generator run from an existing shower circuit?
No. Every Vidalux steam generator, from 3kW to 15kW, needs its own dedicated electrical circuit, and all of them are hard-wired. Vidalux can state the power consumption of each size, and a qualified electrician will specify the correct cable size and breaker and check that your consumer unit can handle the chosen kW rating. 15 kW generator must be connected to a three-phase connection.
In England, installing a new circuit, which a steam generator needs, is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, as the IET explains. It must be notified to Building Control, usually by the electrician who certifies it. According to GOV.UK, Approved Document P is the Building Regulation in England covering electrical safety in dwellings. Wales and Scotland run their own rules.
What Size Generator Does a Low Ceiling Steam Room Need?
A low ceiling steam room often needs a smaller generator than the same floor area at full height. Generators are sized by room volume in cubic metres and by room materials, and a lower ceiling means less volume to fill.
Take a loft room with a floor of 2.0m by 1.2m and a ceiling of 2.0m. That gives 4.8 m³, which sits within the 4.5kW band of 4 to 7 m³. Now take a larger floor of 2.0m by 1.5m. At a 2.0m ceiling it comes to 6.0 m³, still inside the 4.5kW band. At 2.4m the same floor reaches 7.2 m³, past the top of that band and into the range of the 6kW steam room generator, which its product page lists for 5 to 8 m³.
For the rest of the range, Vidalux’s typical bands are 3kW for small rooms or compact enclosures, 9kW for 9 to 13 m³, and 12kW to 15kW for large domestic or light commercial rooms. These are approximate. Exact performance depends on insulation, room materials, ventilation, and ceiling height, so treat the bands as a starting point and confirm the choice with your installer.
Is a bigger generator the safer choice?
Going up a size to be safe works against you. Vidalux’s guidance is to match the generator to the room size for safe operation, and you can work out your generator size from your room’s measurements before you choose.
Which Surfaces Can a Custom Steam Room Use?
A custom steam room can be finished in tile, stone, acrylic, or PVC, all of which cope with constant steam. Plasterboard ceilings are ruled out unless they’re fully tanked.
The room averages around 45°C during a session and can reach 60°C at maximum, with the air saturated the whole time. Warm steam rises, which is why the ceiling is the surface Vidalux’s guidance singles out. If you’re weighing up board for the ceiling, it’s worth reading why plasterboard fails in steam before the room is boarded.
Lighting has its own rule. Only 12V AC steam-rated fittings are acceptable in a steam room. Each Vidalux generator has a connection for 12V AC lighting, a lighting switch on the control panel, and a 3m lighting cable, and the lights themselves are bought separately.
What Vidalux Supplies for a Custom Steam Room
Vidalux supplies the generator and the door for a custom steam room, and your own trades build the room around them. Vidalux doesn’t install, so the building work, plumbing, and electrics sit with your installer and electrician.
Every generator in the range shares the same engineering, with only the power output and room coverage changing. Each one has a stainless-steel case and internal reservoir, a fast-start function for quick steam production, and a temperature probe that holds the room at the level you set without overheating or wide swings. A timer lets you set the session length. The safety components include an overload protection circuit, a pressure-relief safety valve, and an automatic shut-off if the water supply fails. The chrome steam outlet carries an aromatherapy cup that works with approved essential oils with no modification. The range is ISO9001 and CE certified, and the 4.5kW model carries a two-year warranty, subject to registration.

In a low room, the door sets the height to clear. The Steam Room Door 1860mm x 780mm gives a lower option, and a 2000mm x 780mm version is also listed. Both use clear toughened and tempered glass in a matte black 40mm frame, with the hinges and handle included.
You can compare the generators, doors, and accessories across the steam room range.
