Buyers Guide

A steam room built to your own design is the ultimate home spa, and more achievable than many people think. This range gives you the key components to create one: a steam generator sized to your room, a purpose-made glass door, and finishing touches such as colour-changing lighting and moisture-resistant speakers.

Whether you’re converting a large shower enclosure, a spare room or a basement, you can create a steam room that fits your space exactly, rather than choosing from fixed cabin sizes.

Every steam room needs four things: a fully sealed, waterproof room; a steam generator powerful enough for the space; a tight-fitting door to hold the steam in; and a drain in the floor for condensation.

The generator sits outside the room, typically in a nearby cupboard or plant space, and sends steam in through an outlet near the floor. It’s controlled from a panel you can mount inside or outside the room within easy reach. Lighting, sound and seating are then added to finish the space.

Generator output is matched to the volume of your room: multiply length × width × height to find it in cubic metres. As a guide:

3kW: 2 to 4.5m³
4.5kW: 4 to 7m³
6kW: 5 to 8m³
9kW: 10 to 12m³
12kW: 14 to 16m³
15kW: 18 to 20m³

Stone, tile and concrete absorb heat, so if your walls are finished in these materials, or the room has glass walls or external walls, choose the next size up. An undersized generator will struggle to fill the room, while a correctly sized one heats up quickly and holds a consistent temperature.

The room must be fully sealed and waterproof, with walls and ceiling tanked and finished in tile, stone or another moisture-proof surface.

A sloped or curved ceiling stops condensation dripping onto bathers, and a floor drain removes the water that collects during each session.

Keep the ceiling no higher than necessary, as a lower ceiling means less volume to heat.

Your builder or bathroom installer will know these requirements, but plan them in from the start: it’s far easier than adapting a room later.

Measure your room and calculate its volume first, since this decides your generator size. Adjust upwards for hard, heat-absorbing surfaces or glass.

Then check your electrical supply, as larger generators draw more power (see the FAQs below).

FAQ’s

Every steam generator must be hardwired to its own dedicated circuit by a qualified electrician; none can be plugged in.

The larger the generator, the more current it draws, and generators at the top of the range need a substantial supply, so your electrician should check your consumer unit and incoming supply can handle it before you order.

Outside the steam room, somewhere dry, ventilated and accessible for servicing, such as an airing cupboard, a utility space or a void behind the room.

It needs a water feed, a drain and a steam pipe running to the outlet inside the room, which should be positioned low on the wall and away from where people sit. The control panel comes with a 3m cable, and a 5m extension is available if you need more reach.

Often, yes. A walk-in shower can become a steam shower if it’s fully enclosed from floor to ceiling, with a sealed door and a ceiling to hold the steam in. The walls must be fully tiled and tanked, and a small generator, usually 3kW or 4.5kW, will suit most shower-sized spaces.

If your shower is open-topped or has gaps above the glass, it will need to be enclosed first. Alternatively, a ready-made Steam Shower Cabin gives you steam without any building work.

Steam rooms run at a lower temperature than saunas but at almost 100% humidity, which makes the heat feel intense. Most people enjoy sessions at around 40 to 45°C

Sessions of 10 to 20 minutes are typical, followed by a cool shower.

The generator runs at full power while filling the room with steam, then cycles on and off to maintain the temperature, so it uses less once the room is up to heat.

As a guide, at around 25p per kWh, a 6kW generator costs a maximum of £1.50 an hour, and a 3kW about 75p. A typical session costs well under these maximums, and a correctly sized generator is more efficient than an undersized one working flat out.

In hard water areas, limescale builds up inside the generator over time – to help combat this we recommend our clear and bright water softener to help keep it working efficiently.

In the Steam Room – Wipe down surfaces and leave the door open after use so the room can dry out.

As with any shower environment or tiled area, infrequent attention may be required for the grouting, depending on the materials used to create the steam room.
