Buyers Guide

Our outdoor range is built for the garden from the ground up, not adapted from an indoor cabin. Choose from Traditional Barrels, for an authentic Finnish sauna, or the 2 Person Hybrid Mini-Cube, which pairs a traditional stove with our Complete Heat full-spectrum infrared. Every model is topped with a permanent steel roof and arrives as a kit, ready to build on your own prepared base.

Traditional Barrel: Premium Scandinavian Spruce, heated by a traditional electric stove with the sauna stones included, so you can pour water over them for the classic Finnish burst of steam (löyly). Available in 2, 2-4 and 4-6 person sizes.

Hybrid Mini-Cube: a traditional stove and Complete Heat full-spectrum infrared in one Hybrid 2-person cabin. You can switch between high-heat Finnish sessions and gentler everyday infrared.

Outdoor saunas are substantial structures, weighing roughly 400 to 525kg depending on size, so they need a solid, level base of concrete, paving slabs or a properly built deck.

Choose a spot as close to the house as practical to keep your electrician’s cable run short. Allow at least 30cm above the unit and room on all sides for the door and maintenance. Check the exact dimensions on each product page, and see our full siting guide.

Start with how many people will use it at once, and how much garden you can give up. If you want the pure Finnish ritual, the barrels are the natural choice: the curved shape circulates heat efficiently, and the larger sizes suit families and groups. If you want the option of gentler infrared sessions too, the Hybrid Mini-Cube gives you both in a compact footprint.

Most barrel saunas are topped with felt or bitumen shingles, which are awkward to fit, look untidy and turn brittle in the sun.

Every Vidalux outdoor sauna has a steel roof with black waterproof fixings instead: a clean finish from day one and lasting protection from British weather. Add an 8mm tempered glass door that lets in natural light while holding the heat in, stones included as standard, and a UK-based team that knows every model.

If you already have an insulated summerhouse, garage or garden room, one of our indoor saunas can be installed inside it and gives you a wider choice of models, including plug-in infrared.

If you don’t, an outdoor sauna is the simpler route. It’s a complete, weatherproof structure in its own right, so there’s no building to buy, insulate or maintain around it. Outdoor saunas also give you the full experience of stepping out into fresh air to cool off between rounds, which is at the heart of the Finnish tradition. Whichever route you choose, the base and a hardwired electrical supply are the main items to plan for.

FAQ’s

It’s much more cost-effective to get a local handyman to do the installation. Your sauna arrives as a kit, and assembly is straightforward (see our installation videos).
The base and the electrical connection are arranged with a groundworker and a qualified electrician of your choosing, and this is never included by any sauna seller; it’s always a separate service. Get quotes early, but book the electrical work only once your sauna has arrived and been checked.

WIRING: Traditional sauna stoves are fixed appliances and must be hardwired by a Part P qualified electrician; they can’t be plugged into a standard socket. Outdoors, this usually means an armoured (SWA) cable run underground from your consumer unit, so include it in your electrician’s quote. If you need further details, simply get in touch or see our installation guides.

BASE: A solid, level base: concrete, paving slabs or a properly built timber deck. The Barrel models weigh roughly 400 to 525kg, grass, soil and loose gravel will settle unevenly over time, causing door alignment problems and letting water pool underneath. Make the base slightly larger than the sauna’s footprint, and ask your groundworker to build in a gentle fall so rainwater runs away from the timber. The base should be ready before your sauna arrives, so you can build straight away.

Outdoor saunas arrive on a pallet by kerbside delivery. The driver brings it as close as access safely allows, but won’t carry it into your rear garden, unpack it or remove the pallet. Measure gates and side passages beforehand. It’s a good idea when it does come time to unpack or move the item to have at least two people ready to move the kit to your base.

Free standard delivery to mainland UK is included in the price and takes 5 to 7 working days. Our dispatch team will contact you to agree a delivery day that suits you.

Need it sooner?
Express and next day delivery are available at checkout. Your sauna ships from our UK warehouse on a tracked pallet service, flat-packed in securely wrapped boxes sized to fit through standard doorways.

HEAT-UP TIMES: As a guide, allow around 15 minutes to reach a comfortable temperature for a traditional stove. A cold day or an exposed spot may take longer, so a sheltered position should be considered. On the Hybrid Mini-Cube, the infrared heaters give you warmth you can feel within minutes while the stove comes up to temperature.

WINTER: It’s actually the time when many owners enjoy it most. Finnish saunas are traditionally used all year round, and stepping out into cold air between rounds is part of the ritual. Expect the sauna to take a bit longer to heat up on a cold or windy day than in summer, and a sheltered position makes a noticeable difference. Keep the door closed while it heats up, and brush snow off the roof after heavy falls.

In most cases, no. In England, a garden sauna usually falls under permitted development for outbuildings, provided it isn’t in front of the house, stays under 2.5m high if it’s within 2m of a boundary, and covers no more than half your garden. Different rules apply if your home is listed, in a conservation area or national park, or is a flat or maisonette, and rules in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland vary. If you’re unsure, check with your local council before ordering. It’s also worth letting your home insurer know once it’s installed.

RUNNING COSTS: Less than you might think

At around 25p per kWh, the 4.5kW stove in the 2 Person barrel costs a maximum of about £1.13 an hour, and the 6kW stove in the larger barrels about £1.50. Real costs are lower, because the stove cycles off once the cabin reaches temperature.

Three one-hour sessions a week come to under £20 a month even on the largest barrel (At Maximum setting), still well below a £60 gym membership before you add fuel and time to get there. See how running costs are calculated

HOW TO LOOK AFTER THE WOOD: Treat the outside of the sauna with a quality exterior wood treatment when you build it, and reapply it every year or two to keep the Scandinavian Spruce protected from rain and sun. Never treat the inside: sauna interiors are left natural, as treatments can give off fumes when heated. Once a year, check that the roof fixings are secure and that the door closes cleanly, and keep the area around the base clear of leaves and debris so the timber can dry out between uses.

This is the second Vidalux cabin I have purchased. This one is an electric shower, right hand in black. It looks magnificent in my newly refurbished bathroom. The cabin has reduced the amount of re-tiling required significantly. Relatively easy to install.

Vidalux SS80 NO ELECTRICS free standing shower cabin, purchased June 26. This is the second purchase I have made of a shower cabin from Vidalux, from selection on the website to purchase everything was so easy, once the purchase was completed the confirmation support was excellent. I was emailed regarding a suitable delivery date of my choice and when I had chosen a date I was given a window time for delivery. All in all the selection, purchase and delivery date couldn’t have gone any smoother. As with a previous purchase from Vidalux all components of the shower cabin were packaged for protection and once delivered it had everything required to build a complete shower cabin, as very precise instructions were included I had no problem in completing the self assembly my self, not a problem if your handy the instructions and videos on the Vidalux website are there to assist you if you’re struggling. However if your not into DIY then you need to bring in someone who is capable of being able to assemble the unit whether they be professional or otherwise, certainly don’t try to assemble it yourself because you may regret it. All in all I’m very satisfied with my second purchase from Vidalux and would definitely recommend them if your thinking of buying from them, quality units at very competitive prices.

Purchased a Vidalux RT79 as we needed a shower in a very small bathroom. I chose this for its leak free promise and I can see from the construction that it is unlikely that leaks will be a problem. The parts were good quality and fitted together without too much difficulty, that said, the instructions could have been a bit clearer especially for the plumbing connections. A manufacturing defect on the tray was swiftly and easily resolved by the customer service sending out a replacement. The pod is small enough to fit where the bath was and unfortunately the shelf inside is just where I would bump my head on it, so that is removed. The rain head is very effective and handset works well although the body jets were not to my liking. It look smart in the refurbished bathroom.

Shaun Maggs

Received my sauna about 6 weeks ago and it's been a great addition to my gym. The Sauna works exactly as described and the customer support us very good for any questions. Would highly recommend.

Jeff

Purchased a Vidalux 2 person sauna, sauna arrived well packaged on arranged day right up to my front door. Very straight forward to simply click all sides into place and it was done. We absolutely love the sauna, very well built easy to use and the best way to relax at the end of the day. Also, wow! What a relaxing sleep I have when I have an evening sauna. Perfect service thank you!

Ian Hendry

Excellent products and good value for money. The company were always professional and responsive during my project. I would recommend.

Scott Gibson

Fantastic service. Unfortunately a glass had broken in transit but they sent a whole new part immediately.

Bob Nairn

The two person sauna is pretty easy to assemble and looks great in our spare bedroom. Delivery options offered were most flexible and the actual delivery itself was superb. The sauna is simple to use, very efficient, excellent value for money and for anybody looking for one I really recommend you have a look at Vidalux.
